OL Group 2011

Did your student enjoy his or her orientation experience? Is he or she looking for an opportunity to get more involved on campus? We suggest that you encourage your student to apply to become an SFA orientation leader!

Orientation leaders (OLs) are essential to the recruitment efforts of the university and the success of incoming students. These students assume many responsibilities, including helping in the preparation of all orientation sessions, providing information to future students and family members through small and large group settings and, most importantly, promoting SFA in a fun and comfortable atmosphere.

OLs train throughout the spring semester and are paid to work each orientation session during the summer. These students gain invaluable experience while having fun at the same time. Each year, OLs report they have gained confidence, improved their communication skills, increased their knowledge of the university, made connections with other students and staff, and built their leadership abilities. This is truly an elite group of students who are recognized across campus for their hard work, professionalism and SFA pride.

For more information about the OL position, please go to and click on the “Become an Orientation Leader” link on the left side. All applications and required documents must be turned in by Nov. 4. All applicants will be contacted regarding a group interview date and time. Becoming an Orientation Leader is a wonderful opportunity, so encourage your student to apply today!

More than 70 student leaders gathered at SFA’s Piney Woods Conservation Center Aug. 23-24 for The Gathering, a retreat for student leaders from areas across campus to come together to collaborate on how they can work together to make SFA a better place.

Students represented the following areas:

The retreat was put on by the Office of Student Affairs Programs and staffed by representatives from Student Activities, Leadership and Service, Greek Life, Orientation, Student Publications, Multicultural Affairs and Campus Recreation.

This summer, attendees at freshman and transfer orientations gave back to the Nacogdoches community through a T-shirt sale fundraiser. During each Orientation session, parents and family members were able to purchase a “Proud SFA Parent” T-shirt to not only show their Lumberjack pride, but to also make a donation to the Nacogdoches County United Way.

This summer, our Lumberjack parent and family members helped raise more than $2,500 over the course of three months! The Orientation Programs staff presented Gary Lee Ashcraft, NCUW President/CEO, with a check during the July 28-29 orientation session.

Nacogdoches County United Way leads in meeting the needs of education, health and financial stability in our community, and strives to match resources to needs in order to empower people in Nacogdoches County to make a difference. Orientation Programs has included a fundraiser benefitting the NCUW in the last three years of summer orientation sessions.

Once your student has been accepted into SFA, it’s time to sign up for New Student Orientation! New Student Orientation is a two-day event, geared toward helping students and their families make the transition into college and integrating them into the life of SFA.

During Orientation, students and family members will have the opportunity to speak with representatives from academic departments, student affairs, residence life, dining services, as well as the representatives from the areas that provide student services and resources.

The cost for all incoming freshmen attending orientation is $145 and includes lodging at Steen Hall, meals, Purple Haze T-shirt, publications and administrative fees. For parents and family members 18 years or older, the cost is $90 and includes accommodations in Lumberjack Lodge, meals and publications. The price for family members lodging off-campus is $70, and families are then responsible for their own accommodations. For pricing information for children 17 years and under, visit the Orientation website.

Students and family members can register online at, by mailing in the Orientation brochure, or via phone.

The New Student Orientation sessions for summer 2011 are: June 9-10, June 16-17, June 23-24, July 21-22 and July 28-29. Student and family members should only attend one session.
