In honor of the holiday season, students from the Freshman Leadership Academy will be selling decorated candy canes beginning on Monday, Nov. 29 and continuing throughout the week. The week-long event, Canes for Canes benefits the residents at Willowbrook Nursing Home. Proceeds will go to help offset the cost of personal comforts residents need each week but may lack the money to cover them. These simple comforts could be a trip to the beauty salon or a subscription to a favorite magazine. “We make this project part of our class to help our students learn about producing an event but more so about students using their leadership skills to help the community.” Said student instructor Sarah Feye. Students have spent hours designing and producing the decorated candy canes, advertising campaign and conducting the sale. “You really see how as leaders we can make a difference.” Said Kayla DeVille, FLA class member. Students in the class began preparing for the sale in October. “Each student had to research and present an idea for a service project and then we decided as a class which one we were going to support. It has really brought us together as a class” added Janice Haynes, another member of the class.
Students form the class will be selling the candy canes in front of the Baker Pattillo Student Center from 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. each day of the sale. The FLA students will also deliver the Candy Canes to students, faculty and staff on campus. Candy canes intended for folks off campus will be available for pick-up in the Involvement Center. Each candy cane comes with a card you personalize for your friend, roommate, or sweetheart. The suggested donation is only one dollar. You can even choose from a variety of different flavors.
