Up ’til Dawn execs visit St. Jude

26 Aug

Two executive board members from Up ’til Dawn, a student organization that raises funds and awareness for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in Memphis, TN, attended St. Jude’s annual Collegiate Leadership Seminar July 30-August 1 in Memphis. St. Jude brings in hundreds of Up ’til Dawn participants, as well as hundreds of members of Tri Delta and a few other Greek organizations who support St. Jude as their philanthropy.

Shayna Borhaug, Up ’til Dawn executive director and Lake Dallas senior, and Grant Korbel, Up ’til Dawn assistant director and Plano sophomore, attended the conference with Jamie Bouldin, assistant director for leadership and service. Brooke Klett, the SFA Tri Delta philanthropy chair, and Blair Bedner, also an SFA Tri Delta, attended the conference as well. Conference activities included a tour of the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital campus, a mock Up ’til Dawn event at the University of Memphis, and numerous conference sessions on fundraising, entertainment ideas, and teambuilding.

Up ’til Dawn supports St. Jude through an annual event where students send letters to friends and family, asking them to donate to St. Jude. Participants in the letter-sending campaign are then invited to attend the Finale Event, which consists of a variety of entertainment and a check presentation that announces how much money the letter-sending campaign was able to generate. Up ’til Dawn also puts on a few side events each year that raise funds toward the overal goal. SFA’s letter-sending campaign will take place in November, and the finale event will take place in the spring semester.

During Welcome Week, students have several chances to learn more about service opportunities in the Nacogdoches community and to give back to others by taking part in service projects.

  • On Tuesday, August 31, Student Affairs Programs and Omicron Delta Kappa are hosting a blood drive from noon-6p on the third floor of the student center. The Blood Center of East Texas is always seeking new donors, and all donors will receive a T-shirt and a coupon for a free pint of ice cream, in addition to being eligible for door prizes!
  • The Community Partners Breakfast on Wednesday, September 1 provides students with an opportunity to meet and learn more about the numerous non profit agencies in town that are seeking volunteers. The breakfast is free and goes from 8-10 a.m. in the BPSC Twilight Ballroom. (Click here to see the fall 2010 cpb flier.)
  • On Friday, September 3, students have a chance to give back to the community by working on projects with Habitat for Humanity at their local ReStore location.
